Who’s up for a Golf R drag race!

We’ve brought in the all-new Mk8 Golf R to go up against its older brother, the Mk7, to see which is the fastest over the quarter-mile.

As you’d suspect, there’s very little to split them when you look at the stats on paper. Starting with the Mk8, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, which delivers 320hp \u0026 420Nm. It weighs in at 1,551kg, and costs from around £39,000.

As for the Mk7, well it’s also powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, although it only puts down 300hp and 400Nm. It does weigh slightly less though, coming in at 1,483kg. This is largely down to the newer Golf R having a more advanced AWD system, however.

    vw tends to have more hp than they claim. i have a 2015 gti and it claims to have like 210 but there’s been about 5 stock gti dyno’d and they’re running around 230-240

    As a 7.5 owner, I’m glad to see the stock HP improvement on the MK8 but my car looks SOOO much better than that thing. If I had to, I would get an older one before the new model TBH

    Where do you get a MK 7.5 with 300hp? They all have 310hp at least in Germany. Also, how many miles does the 7.5 have in this video? Its not uncommon for engines to loose a good amount of power with increasing milage and the clutch or the haldex could be worn. If you dont go into detail i dont see the point on publishing drag races like that. It just shows that this particular mk8 is faster than this particular mk7.5 spreading misinformation.

    This comparison was clearly intended to emphasize the advantages of the new car. At the launch, the 7.5 experienced a slight delay. They mentioned the release of the brake, but it probably has to do with the fact that when stopped, neither of the dual clutches is engaged. Regardless of the true cause of this slight delay at launch, this slight delay accounts for essentially all of the difference between the two cars in the first run. After they compensated for this difference in the second run, the new car still crossed the line slightly ahead of the 7.5, but the difference was so slight as to be of no significance. The last runs started from highway speed, and amounted to a test of passing ability on a high speed freeway, such as may be found in Germany I suppose. In this kind of test the car with the advantage in peak power will always have the overall advantage irrespective of differences in mass or the power/weight ratio. The ability to overcome atmospheric drag is not influenced by the mass of the vehicle. By the way, the fellow driving the 7.5 said that the advantage of the new car in the later run, starting from highway speed, was attributable to a difference in "torque", and not to a difference in power. This is profoundly ignorant, and it is unfortunate that we continue to see automotive journalists (these guys are modern journalists) that lack a proper, fundamental understanding of torque and power. Peak speed of a vehicle is encountered when atmospheric drag force has increased to the point where this force and the driving force are in equilibrium. There are numerous different ways to write an expression for the driving force. A few pertinent examples: "wheel torque / wheel radius", "power / (wheel radius x wheel rotational speed)", "power / (vehicle speed / (2 x pi))", "(engine torque x engine rpm) / (vehicle speed / (2 x pi))", "(engine torque x overall gear ratio) / wheel radius". These different ways to express driving force are all fully equivalent. Important to know, though, is that at peak velocity, the expression you use for driving force, whichever one you prefer, will be very close to the maximum value for that expression. In fact it is only because of the stepped nature of discrete gear ratios that the the expression will not generally be precisely at its maximum possible value for the vehicle, when peak velocity is reached. It is apparent that when peak velocity is reached, power will be at or near its maximum possible value for the vehicle. The same is true for the product of engine torque and engine rpm. Given that engine torque per se (as opposed to the product of engine torque and engine rpm) is at or near its maximum possible value when peak velocity is reached, it makes no real sense to think that the passing performance of a vehicle would be more about engine torque than about power. Of course if what you mean by "torque" is torque at the wheels, then it makes very little difference whether you think of it in terms of torque vs. power, because in order to maximize wheel torque at a given instant, you maximize power, not engine torque. It was apparent from the fact that power is 10% greater in the new car than in the 7.5 that the new car will have a slight advantage in terms of passing ability at highway speed. Okay, but in a practical sense I doubt whether I would notice even this difference. And if I did notice this difference, it still would not make up for my strong dislike of the way they did away with essentially all of the knobs and replaced them with touch-screen controls. This is the reason that, in my subjective opinion, the new Golf R is an abomination.

    The thing is that these engines are so tunable that really this difference can be down to tweaking a few settings on the ecu. What would be really interesting would be to see both cars with identical aftermarket tunes - ie, take the software variable out.

    I don't like 8R interior especially this overkill control system through display with lack of buttons and I don't like front of 8R, but speed and torque vectoring on 8R looks way better. Still I would buy 7 or 7.5 R with some reasonable mileage, because I see it as better bargain and if I would want higher engine power I would tune it.

    So the Golf 7 is the one with the petrol particulate filter which isn't the same spec as the 310kw ones we got overseas right? I think think this is more drivetrain and torque in the new one. Overseas car sites got better numbers for their 7.5s than Matt's getting.
